“MORNING, MARTHA ANN.”

Though she knew that she should be expecting it—Tug had greeted her in the exact same way every morning for the past two weeks—she was always a little surprised when he continued to make the effort. Pleasantly so, she would admit.“Morning, Tug,” she responded with a put-upon sigh, feeling a flush of unwanted pleasure move through her chest.

His gaze slid over her body, lingering on her breasts. Impossibly, her nipples tingled and she felt twin flags of color rise on her cheeks. “Still working on your tan, I see.”

She resisted the urge to fan herself. Goodness, what was wrong with her? “It’s typically what one does when one vacations at the beach.”

“How much longer are you going to be here, Martha Ann? I don’t remember you and Sheldon ever staying more than a week at a time.”

That’s because Sheldon had had fair skin, burned easily and was too vain to use sunblock because he thought it wasn’t masculine. He’d invariably burn and then be ready to go long before their vacation was supposed to be over. It had been damned annoying.

“I’m here for another week,” she finally answered. And she was considering staying longer, if her room wasn’t booked. Her children were grown, her grand-kids in college. She talked to them every few days, but there was nothing pressing for her to go back to, nothing on her calendar that couldn’t wait. Why shouldn’t she enjoy herself? Martha Ann thought. Why should she rush back to…nothing.

His smile widened, as though he was genuinely pleased. “I’m glad to hear it. The beach is always nicer when there’s a pretty woman on it.”

She felt a droll smile slide over her lips and resisted the urge to fidget. “Does that line usually work for you?”

“It’s not a line, Martha Ann. It’s a compliment. Try to enjoy it.”

And for the first time in two weeks, he continued on his walk without inviting her to dinner. Had he given up? she wondered. Or lost interest?

Either way she’d been a fool.
